Toy Safety Article: The information you need to make safe toy choices and valuable tips on what you as parents and caregivers
can do to protect your children from unsafe toys!

Protect Your Child Against This Hidden Toy Safety Hazard
By Lill Hawkins

Whether your child is two or twelve, toy safety should be a priority. Of course you wouldn't knowingly let your child play with unsafe toys. However, it's what you don't know that can put your child in danger. Before you dismiss the thought that your child could come to harm, even with all your efforts to protect them, consider how easy it is for your child to be exposed to unsafe toys.

For instance, no matter how closely you watch them, toddlers usually spend time away from you. Whether it's daycare, Grandma's house or the couple of hours that you spend talking to a friend while your kids play with each other on the floor - there are times when you're not as aware of your child's playthings.

If your child is older, there's school to consider. From the science lab to the playground, schools aren't always the safe havens we like to think they are. Of course, there are also the other kids - some of whom bring toys to school. Not all parents are as conscientious as you and I. Many kids have toys that have been recalled - toys you would never let your kids play with.

Unfortunately, when our children are away from us - for whatever reason - we aren't in control. Other people, even caregivers and family members who love our children - may expose them to danger without realizing it.

What can you do about unsafe toys that your child may come across in another environment? First of all, be aware of the places where your child spends time. Look around at your friend's house during that play date. Talk to Grandma about the toys she lets your child play with while they're there. Be familiar with your child's school and their friends. When they have friends over, make sure that you know what they've brought with them.

Of course, children should never play unsupervised at another child's home when adults aren't home. This is just common sense, although many parents don't think to ask if parents will be present. They just assume that they will be. Tragedy sometimes follows, especially when guns or weapons are involved.

Protect your children from unsafe toys by knowing where they are, who they're playing with and WHAT they're playing with.
